The Lakewood Family YMCA is the association's flagship branch and serves the close-knit community of Lakewood and East Long Beach with approximately 4,000 membership units. The current two-story, 35,000-square-foot YMCA is a state-of-the-art facility that combines award-winning design with deep community impact. It includes a gymnasium, aquatic center, strength training center, outdoor strength patio, fitness studios, teen center, and child-watch area-supporting inclusive, full-spectrum programming for all ages. Nationally recognized byCompetitor Magazinefor its exceptional design and named a California Nonprofit of the Year, the facility exemplifies how mission-driven innovation can create a powerful hub for health, connection, and community transformation. The current annual operating budget is $8.8M with an annual campaign of $240,000. The Lakewood Family YMCA has on average, 240 employees and up to 300 for the summer, with 10 full-time exempt staff. The branch operates 3 after-school sites and 2-day camp sites, an offsite gymnastics center (two-time defending YUSA champions), aquatic programs, youth and adult sports, a very active senior membership, and up to 12,000 members predominately family based.General Overview:Responsible for the overall leadership and operation of the Lakewood Branch, including board development, membership growth and retention, marketing, programs, staff development, financial management, community relations, and strategic partnerships. Must inspire and engage staff, volunteers, and members in support of the Y's mission. Demonstrated success in financial management, sustaining the nonprofit model while driving growth. Provide dynamic, goal-driven leadership that ensures high-quality, consistent member experience. Requires strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and the ability to lead through change. Must exemplify the Y's core values-caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility-in all actions and decisions.Preferred Criteria for Candidates:Education & Certifications:Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Arts degree required; Masters degree preferred. YMCA Branch Leader certificate required within three years from date of hire.Experience & Background:Twelve or more years of progressive management experience, preferably in a YMCA or nonprofit setting with budgets of $5M+. Strong ability to lead operations independently with a proven track record in membership growth and retention. Skilled in building community partnerships; experience with capital projects and facility development preferred. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and thrive in a high-demand, high-reward environment. Confident and decisive leadership is essential.Key Focus Areas:

  • Coordinates the development of the Branch Board and committees. Directs the volunteer activities (policy and program) of the branch.
  • Directs strategic planning efforts and develops the annual operating plan of the branch.
  • Directs the financial development activities of the branch.
  • Develops, manages, and monitors the branch operating budget, meets or exceeds budget targets.
  • Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develops and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery area.
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and supervision of staff.
  • Develops and directs high quality member engagement strategies and programs which support branch and association mission, goals, and strategies.
  • Ensures the safety and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Directs branch marketing and communication efforts.
  • Directs programs and initiatives Association wide as needed.
  • Serves as a member of the association's executive council and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA.
  • Provides strategic leadership and oversight for programs and initiatives across the entire association.Living Area:The City of Lakewood is in Los Angeles County, California, and at the time of the 2020 census had a population of 82,496. It is bordered by Long Beach on the west and south, Bellflower on the north, and Cerritos on the east. Sometimes called "an instant city" because of its origins, going from lima bean fields in 1950 to a well-developed city by 1960, Lakewood is the archetypical post-World War II American suburb. Lakewood was the first city in the nation to contract for all of its municipal services when it incorporated as a municipality in 1954, making it the nation's first "contract city." Lakewood was named Sports Illustrated's "Sportstown USA" in 2005 for the State of California. The Lakewood branch is located 9 miles northeast of Downtown Long Beach and close to recreational ocean beaches and marinas.
